Re: "Do you see this announced delay as a big potential problem, or just one minor speed bump in the road to better and faster future chips? "

I see it as a BIG REAL Problem - but a short term problem that will get resolved AND will lead to the inevitable faster devices down the road.

Re: "Why do you think we are having so many delay problems lately? Just a run of bad luck or something else that needs to be addressed?"

Intel is different than almost all CPU companies in that they have SO MANY DIFFERENT DESIGNS going on in parallel.

And each design is generally pushing one technology envelope or another.

Their chip sets are adding unproven RAMBUS technology, the CPUs are adding L2 cache to the die, Merced is a new EPIC architecture, other chip sets are adding graphics processors, etc.

Do you read about AMD's complete F*CK up of their K6-3 with L2 cache added to the die?

No !

The Media and analysts POUNCE on all the Intel delays like vultures circling a dead body.

But were these same guys/gals praising Intel for pulling off the Mendocino, Dixon, 440 BX, 440 GX ?

No.

Intel's Merced project is a lightning rod for the Media. It is a totally new architecture requiring totally new designs and software support - so it is fraught with pot holes along the road to success. Every dim-wit Pundit in the world will tell you that MERCED won't work - but these dim-wit pundits are generally ex-designers with no success of their own in their resume's.

Basically, Intel is taking great risks with their many designs and some of the high profile ones are suffering inevitable delays.

The real mettle of Intel wil be shown as they solve these problems and bring new designs to market.
