Joe,

Good points all.

It is clearly in the interest of the consumer to have a means of transferring all of his/her music collection to/through a device which can facilitate using it in a portable digital player or in a car audio system.

The CD is a good choice for that, perhaps the DVD would be even better (much higher storage capacity - about 20X as much).

I like the idea of a single storage device that contains all of my music collection. I currently have a 300 CD capacity changer/player (made by Panasonic - about $300) that is great because I don't have to handle the individual CDs and my entire collection (until I run out of space) is instantly available.

With the right engineering design, this could be the prototype for a digital storage device. A multiple CD/DVD changer that had recording capability and was connected to the other audio components in your system. It should also have an easy access point for connection to the portable flash memory player for downloading music to that device.
Or you could have a port that recorded directly onto a flash memory chip for later playback in the portable player.

Lots of ideas make sense when you consider it from the consumer's standpoint as you have.
