i remember lots of the trades carried out by japanese insurance companies. perhaps the tax loopholes closed for them or other investors. i suspect that many of the trades were like repos with both the buy and sell back arranged in advance...and thus the market risk washed from the trade. a large holder of the stock that was willing to receive ordinary income plus a kicker selling to a tax advantaged entity that was willing to pay to hold the stock for a few hours.
