M1 Singapore to upgrade CDMA mobile network
NEWSBYTES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Singapore mobile telephone network provider M1 will upgrade its code division multiple access (CDMA)
network to prepare for next generation Internet and mobile data services.
Motorola Inc has been awarded the S$15 million (HK$68 million) contract to install the network in the
third quarter of 1999.

The upgrade will include the deployment of an Alcatel CDMA mobile switching center, a centralized base
station controller and base stations, along with the Motorola CDMA radio subsystem.

"This latest investment is part of a long term plan to put in place building blocks for third generation
platform," said Neil Montefiore, chief executive officer of M1.

"While this will be some years away, we have already started to prepare the network for the eventual
transition."

M1 is a consortium of the Keppel Group, Singapore Press Holdings, Cable & Wireless and Cable &
Wireless HKT (formerly Hongkong Telecom).
