I asked specifically, "were there shares in my account with my name printed on them?"

The answer, "yes."

Wachovia ain't cheap, but they do a pretty good job. Way earlier, I asked them to register my shares (mdin, npec), and send them to me, so they could not be shorted. They told me, they already held them in my account, and that absolutely no one has access to any of their shares for such a nefarious purpose.
