Jody, in my area, a lot of people I know bank at Credit Unions, where there has never been any monthly charge or minimum balance [note: you need no special status to belong to and have an account at for instance Clark County School Employees Credit Union., i.e. you don't have to be a "school employee"]. Additionally, Washington Mutual (regional bank based in Seattle, serving WA, OR & ID) has "basic checking", which has free checking with no minimum balance [has offered that for many years-about 10 yrs]. Of course if you want interest bearing checking, the minimum balance is $1,000.

My point is that e-banks are going to have to do more than offer free checking if they want to really go for attracting the masses, IMO.
