You are correct, there is not a clear view from the "muckety mucks", although the more orthodox they are, the more they tend to support such things. Did you know,for example, that although Jews in general are overwhelmingly Democratic voters, Orthodox Jews overwhelmingly vote Republican, and members of Conservative Synagogues are about evenly divided? Anyway, the Constitutional issue is always whether a given practice amounts to "establishment". I argue that something like posting the Ten Commandments is no more "establishment" than posting the Declaration of Independence, since the primary thrust is not to proselytize, but to show a traditional allegiance to certain principles of conduct...
