The drop in violent crime has to do with many factors: turf battles over crack distribution have declined, as the networks have stabilized and the combatants have been killed or incarcerated; Republican mayors have been in power in several major cities, and have supported such things as community policing; and there has been a crackdown on comparatively minor infractions, which has had two effects-- first, it has allowed more people to be busted for things like weapons possession, and second, it has helped to "remoralize public spaces", in accordance with James Q. Wilson's "broken windows " thesis. But the most significant fact is demographic: about 5% of men between the ages of 15 and 30 commit over half the crimes. When that population is reduced, as in the "baby bust", crime goes down. Wait until the "mini- boom" reaches the correct ages, and crime will likely go up...Anyway, the "breakdown in moral order" argument is lengthy, and difficult to make progress with, so I will save it for later....

Coming back to the "breakdown in moral order": since I consider late term abortions as being clear- cut infanticide, the very fact that it is a subject of political controversy is to me an enormity. I also believe that the rash of middle- class girls giving birth only to toss their babies in the trash is a consequence, and that the rise in child abuse in the last 25 years is as well. I am in my forties, and I do not recall anything like the school shootings that have occurred in the last decade happening in the further past. The very fact that there was so much support for Clinton in the face of his disgrace of his office I take as a sign of moral deterioration. This is just to get us started. Since I will be jumped on, I will not bother to elaborate immediately...
