Bid.Com shares surge in heavy trade

OTTAWA, June 18 (Reuters) - Shares in Bid.Com International Inc. (Toronto:BII.TO - news) surged in heavy trade on Friday as ''triple witching'' inflated market volume and value.

The stock rose C$1.45 -- nearly 13 percent -- to close at C$12.85 on the Toronto Stock Exchange in heavy trade as nearly 1.2 million shares traded hands.

The 52-week high for the stock is C$33.65 while its low is 56 Canadian cents.

Bur triple witching -- the simultaneous expiring of options, index options and futures contracts -- may have propped up the stock and Bid.Com may be basking in the glow of a heavy volume of call options being exercised.

The Mississauga, Ontario-based firm sells products as diverse as computer equipment, jewelry and toys through its business-to-consumer auction Web site.

The firm did not release any news today, a spokeswoman said.

Several analysts refused to speculate on what was pushing up the stock's value.

Last week Chief Executive Paul Godin turned over his post to President Jeff Lymburner. Godin remains as chairman of the company.
