I have no particular contempt for christianity over any other form of primitive tribal god worship.

Your excessive contempt for Christianity does...Primitive Tribal God?

I started this thread as a place to discuss libertarian ideas, but as the topic du jour seems to be religion, I'll throw in my personal two cents.

I do feel total contempt for the concept of Original Sin. Lucky is the child who is not inculcated with such a psychologically damaging assessment of his/her own person. Flawed, wicked, imperfect, evil, soul/body dichotomy, etc. All because of some fairy tale about eating an apple in the Garden of Eden. What crap!! Smart is the child who manages to overcome and reject such nonsense.

A lot of Christians and Jews, including some who are otherwise intelligent, never quite accept or reject the premise. They just don't think about it. Those who do fully accept it are perfect bait for the preachers who tell them how to live their lives (and extract significant sums from their wallets). It also explains their deep seated need to try to force others into accepting and believing their hallucinations in an attempt to validate them.

What I truly cannot understand is the need that so many people seem to have for religious faith and beliefs, especially those based on completely irrational premises. If there is a Higher Power, it certainly isn't anything remotely resembling the god/gods postulated by any religion that I'm familiar with.

One more time and pay attention:

Amendment 1
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

That's why the Constitution has something to do with it. You are trying to limit discussion to a single phrase in it.
