Someone mentioned the Yahoo board...this is an interesting one---->

Anybody can pretend to be an expert....

You know....I follow this message board to hear what people are saying, educated about the
industry or not. It's interesting to hear what others think, feel, how they interpret data
received from others and how they put their own spin on the received information to help
them validate the decisions they have made or will make in the future. It amazes me what
some people will say in order to sound intelligent.

Obviously, I3Expert is somebody from Cisco trying to make him/herself feel better. Yes,
RBAK caught the industry with its pants down....but isn't that what new technologies are all
about? Identifying a need before anybody else has identified it and reacting first? Am I
missing something here? Heck, isn't that what Cisco did originally? Sounds like a good
plan to me. RBAK did such a good job identifying the market space before anybody else
that they had a 1 year lead on everybody else. That's an eternity in Silicon Valley. Gives me
the impression that the people making the decisions at RBAK are pretty forward thinking.

Also, I completely disagree with the "keys to success" provided by our "expert". The most
important key is the technology. End of story. When all the smoke clears and all the mirrors
are put away, all that's left is the technology. I wish our "expert" could clarify why RBAK's
technology "blows" (I'm sure SBC, GTE, Bell Atlantic, Bell Canada, Ameritech, UUNET,
Earthlink, Concentric Networks, GTE-I, PacBell, Verio, @HOME, etc would love to hear
this), and what CSCO/LU has that counters it. The CSCO 6400? Hah! The SMS1000
handles 4000 subscribers simultaneously. The 6400 can't handle more than 256 without
croking...and it's not a one box solution...it's a couple of different boxes, pasted together,
with 3 different interfaces. So that's supposed to be a better solution, with better
technology?

I'm not going to disagree that CSCO IOS is a good product. Look where CSCO started and
look where they are now. I don't think anybody would disagree. However, the CSCO xDSL
solution was a quick paste job of trying to make 10 year old IOS do something it wasn't
designed to do. RBAK's code may not be as mature. Heck, they haven't been around long
enough. The key is that the RBAK AOS has been expressly designed for the purpose of
provisioning thousands of subscribers. IOS was not.

The LU argument is ridiculous. RBAK does not make a "switch", so the argument is invalid.
It's like trying to compare apples and oranges. You may be able to go on all day with the
technology stuff (or at least the "buzzwords"), but try to make valid comparisons.

No, RBAK does not have the money to duke it out with the heavy hitters. They have to
continue to move quickly to stay out of the crosshairs. Competition is going to finally come
out with products this year. RBAK must stay a step ahead. However, as long as their
technology remains superior, it doesn't really matter. They're already in production
networks. Nobody else is.

I'm not even going to bother getting into the other points. It's all moot. As with anything,
proper development takes time. RBAK could go out and buy a technology from somebody
else and do a patch-job integrating it into their environment, ala CSCO or LU. If we were to
look closely at EVERY product by each company you've mentioned, we could find "key
technologies that <enter company name here> lacks". If the other companies you've
mentioned already have these mature features and key technologies in a xDSL solution,
why aren't they dominating the market now?

RBAK does not need to be acquired by a "major player" in order to succeed. They're doing
it now. Like any company, if they don't continue to innovate, to stay on top of the customer's
needs, they'll fade away. However, I don't think that is the case. Stop trying to blow smoke
up people's asses.

Objective observer my left nut.
