Monday June 21, 5:20 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: Maritz Marketing Research Inc. Beer Around the World: Europeans and Americans Not So Different ST. LOUIS, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In a landmark international survey by Maritz AmeriPoll®, researchers found that 52% of Europeans have consumed at least one beer in the past month, compared to 51% of Americans. And like their American counterparts, European men do far more beer-drinking than women: 73% vs. 36%, compared to 67% of U.S. men and 36% of women. The survey, which contacted by telephone an average of 463 respondents per country, included participants from the U.K., Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. It was conducted by Maritz Marketing Research Inc. of St. Louis in partnership with NIPO Marketing Institute in Amsterdam, widely-known in Europe for its polling capabilities. Ninety-nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall ... While beer-drinking is equally popular in both places, when it comes to quantity, Europeans edge out the Americans. American beer-drinkers average 19 beers per month, while Europeans average 22. But on both continents, men drink approximately twice as much beer as the women. European men average 27, compared to 23 for American men, and European women average 14 to the American women's 11. In the U.S., a majority of beer (63%) is drunk at home, while the rest is consumed in bars, restaurants, or other establishments. In Europe, where people appear to prefer more social drinking, consumption is almost evenly split between home (51%) and bars (49%). In both places, younger groups (age 21-34) tend to prefer drinking out -- in the U.S., 52% of their monthly beer intake is done in bars and restaurants, compared to approximately 60% in Europe. About two-thirds (66%) of Europeans say that their household beer consumption has stayed about the same compared to last year (58% of Americans agreed). Overall, 9% of Europeans say their beer consumption has increased (vs. 11% in the U.S.) and 25% say it has decreased (vs. 31% in the U.S.). The youngest drinkers (age 21-24) in both countries are most likely to say their beer intake has increased: 18% in Europe, and almost 27% in the U.S. Buying Under the Influence? Beer advertising appears to be more effective with Europeans than with Americans. When asked if they could recall any advertising (television, radio, print, billboards, etc.) for beer during the past month, 67% of European respondents said they could, compared to 54% of Americans. While significantly more U.S. men than women can recall beer ads (59% vs. 49%), no such differences are found in Europe (68% for men, 67% for women). In both places, however, recall is highest among younger beer drinkers (age 21-34): 60% in the U.S., 73% in Europe. Stand by Your Brand When it comes to trying new things -- specifically beer -- Americans and Europeans are almost equally dubious. About half (51% in the U.S. and 52% in Europe) in both places say they are not likely to try a new brand of beer. Another 32% of Americans and 27% of Europeans say they are somewhat likely, while 16% in the U.S. and 21% in Europe are very likely. European beer drinkers of both genders are equally cautious of new things, while American men are more than twice as likely as women (22% vs. 9%) to be very likely to try a new brand of beer. Younger drinkers (age 21-34) on both continents share a sense of adventurousness, with 21% in the U.S. and 27% in Europe very likely to try something new in the beer department.
