Pure escapist fiction. Mrs. Pollifax is a grandmother in New Jersey who is bored with her life of charitable works and growing geraniums. So she goes to Washington to volunteer to work for the CIA. Totally unbelievable, absolutely no intellectual content, pure fun.

Christine, here's more of an answer to your question about Mrs. Pollifax. She's a character in a number of hilarious mysteries by Dorothy Gilman. (As I recall, her umbrella proves a formidable weapon at times!) Several have also been turned into films. (I think Rosalind Russell was in one of them.)
