I like Steve's analysis with the exception of cutting a deal with the Cable Guys.
Quite frankly,
#1 the cable guys need to come to AOL and settle, AOL doesn't need to go to them.
Why? T and broadband on cable is full of promise, but T has to close the deal, should their customer's wait to 2001? T still hasn't laid out a plan explaining how or the timetable to upgrade their cable network so that all customer's can receive all cable broadband features.
#2 T knows the reliability of their cable network is inferior to their telecom network. They don't want to cheapen their brand, the goodwill and 6 sigma performance of their phone network. This is why they needed the @Home name.
#3 T wants to go it alone, which is fine, unfortunately they really don't know how to run on internet time, when is the last time anyone really heard or thought of AT&T Worldnet? On the surface, the RBOC's may not be much better but they know they are behind and have enlisted companies like QWST, CSCO, Covad, Rhythm, AOL and other ISP's to push them. These companies provide energy and resources to make X/DSL a wide reality relative to T's feeble efforts through cable, again in my opinion.
#4 By first quarter 2000, X/DSL installation will execeed Cable broadband in my estimation.
#5 Let's see what happens with QWST and US WEST, if not QWST then GBLX, bottom line the best is yet to come in X/DSL. And T/@Home are squarely in the crosshairs.

Qwest and CISCO join forces to lead the convergence of telephone and internet networks
Alliance Enables Qwest to Deliver First End-to-End All Internet Protocol Network

...
With Qwest's recently announced intentions to acquire both US West and Frontier Communications, this alliance will enable Qwest to move US West's traditional network onto Qwest's world class IP backbone. With greater than 50% nationwide market share in Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), US West is the market leader in providing high-speed DSL services that allow broadband access services to residences and businesses over traditional copper lines. Qwest's interest in acquiring US West is to deliver new technology and broadband communications services to local customers.
