No, I don't feel superior to my neighbors, even my Southern neighbors. I discovered in a very hard way that I was simply just another one of the people cursed by my history. Can you understand how terrible it is to grow discovering that your forebears were not heroic pioneers opening up a new country, but desperate, defeated people fleeing from European horror? That instead of personal sacrifice, they destroyed Indians and enslaved Africans, that some of your ancestors enslaved and flogged and raped others of them. And that worst of all, the others did not strike back and die in rebellion. To look back and see your grey-clad ancestors bled for slavery of your rag-clad ancestors.
And here, surrounded by the dispossessed, whose land and kingdom were seized by the United States, I don't feel superior at all.
