Given the upcoming transition to SDLT and plenty of potential competition from LTO (esp the IBM version) and maybe even EXBT (if they get their act together), the tape drives may be seeing their best days. Both competing products are expected to have higher transfer rates and at least EXBT will be lower cost. LTO should also since they don't have to worry about backward compatibility.

At what price is EXBT a buy just for Mammoth II and their library business? They don't seem inclined to sell out but management clearly needs to change. -Z

<Mike Brown spoke at lunch today at StorageTrack (Mike Cannon spoke yesterday).
Very upbeat, tight, cohesive presentation by Brown. Made we wish I'd bought into Quantum a while back...darn - and I just had to buy Maxtor back then.>

Have you ever seen Mike Brown do a down beat presentation? I've seen him predict great things time and time again only to see the continuing downward spiral of price competition. Surely, it looks like Quantum is set for a big battle of market share. They are loosing the low end to Seagate which would seem to mean they'll have seriously falling unit sales.

Are they able to find profitable niche products? Can they do anything to support ASP? Really, they just warned. BigFoot has nearly run it's course. Can they compete, and can they make any money as WD and perhaps Samsung go through months of death throws?

It's all very exciting to predict the consumer market for VCR's will be a savior, but look how people go burned buying into the DVD cycle. Still not sure they are profitable.

Is SDLT on time?

You can always count on Mike Brown to be upbeat. How about Mike Cannon? Are they able to weather the IBM deal with Dell?

What happens to RDRT with Maxtor in trouble at Dell and WD going down the tubes? Do you have a feeling where WD is going to make the first cuts? Internal projects, or IBM projects?

Regards,

Mark
