RE: "You seem confused. "

Jacques,

I am not confused. Beware :), I have very strong beliefs on this topic:

Some people might be unaware of the potential impact of their unintentional subliminal messages they deliver to the people around them by use of certain patterns and trends in their language. (By the way, I'm not saying you were making any subliminal message -- my style is to jump in and restate for both genders)

Re: "Marketing and good packaging. ;)" and "some artificial image"

Aspects of corporate consumer "marketing" programs and "packaging" evoke an "image" to impact sales, some of these images are especially harmful to society when their "artificial" non-congruent meaning (to the essence of the product being sold) lack social responsibility (e.g. some car/beer ads)

There are people who have successfully proven you can orchestrate highly effective and impactful consumer marketing ads/packaging without resorting to socially irresponsible ads/packaging.

RE: "...now you claim it is " some artificial image :)"

The way "Mercedes" was brought up (i.e. as an expensive car), presented a nice opportunity for me to state my opinion: smart children do not waste money on artificial imagery, although commercial stereotyping might imply daughters do.

RE: "Is this a female thing?"

I'm not quite sure what "this" is, so do not understand your question.

I believe the discussion lead into a conversation about patterns, consumer marketing, and impact of this onto girls/women.

RE: "Don't go hitting me with your Gucci bag!!"

I don't own one. But I own a HP Jornada :)

PS The PalmPilots new ad does not demonstrate social responsibility. It's very unfortunate too - since the former CEO of PalmPilot is one of the most successful high-tech consumer CEOs in the industry. She left 3Com (to start a company - to be another big hit I bet) before this ad got out.

RE: "I was just kidding."

Glad you mentioned this. :)
