Re: Iomega to Brand a CD-RW drive
I like it, this is only part of what they should have been
doing for a long time. There's little costs up front
for this kind of revenue and for them to capitalize on their
brand has been called for by many for a long time.
This is the kind of marketing that the so called great one
( K.E. ) should have been doing all along.

IMO the more marketing they can put together the better.

Rocky -

Oh my God, what a huge surprise! You don't believe Iomega getting into the CD-RW business is a good thing! This announcement spells nothing but trouble for IOM!

Who could have predicted that you would see this in a negative light?

Your powers of analysis are truly visionary.

BTW, didn't you post a long time ago that Iomega should put their brand on a CD-RW drive? If it was a bad idea, why did you think they should do it? Or does a good idea just automatically become a bad idea once Iomega adopts it?

Iomega to Brand a CD-RW drive

Thanks for finding confirmation of this, Rocky. At least it's competitive, at 4x4x24x, and $300 seems to be in the right ballpark judging by what I've seen elsewhere.

I wonder what interfaces they'll use on it. Personally, I'd like a nice Iomega-style colored external device with a Firewire interface to compete with Sony's upcoming ext. Firewire CD-RW, but I presume they'll go with SCSI for any external.

Of course, I can't see why a company would OEM a drive from Iomega when it was actually built by Philips. Am I missing something? And there's no high margin CD-RW media to sell. On the other hand, if they're sourcing them from Philips, they won't have the same degree of manufacturing problems/costs associated with Zip and Jaz. ZipCD is great name (building off Zip awareness).

As someone else mentioned earlier on the thread, if Iomega actually got into the business of innovating in this area, a DVD-RAM device which could also write CD-R and CD-RW would be a mega-product.
