Seagate to Invest 800 Mln Ringgit in Malaysia, BT Says


Singapore, June 18 (Bloomberg) - Seagate Technology Inc., the world's No. 1 computer disk drive maker, will invest 800 million Malaysian ringgit (US$210.5 million) over the next five years in Malaysia, the Business Times said, citing a Bernama wire agency interview with senior vice-president for technology manufacturing, Timothy Harris, It will start making its latest Barracuda ATA drive, Seagate's first with large magneto- resistive recording heads, a new technology. Seagate has seven plants in several Malaysian states, employing more than 15,000 employees, the report said.

Singapore and Malaysia are the world's biggest exporters of computer disk drives, devices used to store electronic data, with Western Digital Corp., Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics Industries Ltd. and Maxtor Corp. among the other big producers.
