Josef, the Datek link IS NOT a banner ad.
Please see post # 7665 for my complete ranting on this subject. : )

Josef,

There should not be any banner ads appearing in member areas. We recognize the commitment that has been made to SI members, and we also recognize that the speed of the SI experience cannot be compromised by large graphics. If you have seen any banner ads please let me know.

Thanks,

Russell

Green Slime (300 posts later):

There have been over 300 posts on the Welcome to Silicon Investor thread since the Green Slime first popped up. Many posts have been thoughtful comment on a subject that obviously touches many long-time SI members' sensibilities.

Josef Svejk's silent comment (spamming many threads with a www.datek.com link ) is, IMO, telling. His point, I believe, is that since his link is obviously spam, and objectionable, so therefore must be SI's now-blue link.

Svejk's latest post also raises, to my mind, interesting points:
exchange2000.com

IMO, Brad Dryer's April 98 post: "we will not bombard you" with "other forms of solicitation," and "you will have the ability to turn them off," did not establish a legal, contractual obligation. I was unaware, though, of the solicitation on the SI homepage that Svejk points out: exchange2000.com.

My belief is that this inducement creates a contractual obligation. SI is obliged to enable members to "elect to permanently turn off advertising banners."

The blue-slime, however, is not a banner. (I assume GNET had legal assurances to that effect prior to launching it.) Where SI and GNET come up short, with this launch, is not in legalities, but in spirit, in ethics.

I too find hope in the length of time it is taking SI to respond to the controversy. I hope it means it is building a disabler and wishes to respond at the time of its launch.

If not, it's sad. They broke their word.

Best wishes,
Tom

Josef:

If you think you can run a site as good as SI on just new membership fees, go out and start one. Nothing is free in life. If your are a GNET stock holder like I am, you should be happy to have more revenue streams. It takes money to run a web site!
