In an age where new technology products strive to be all things to all people, Compaq Computer Corp. is readying a high-end server appliance that aims to do only one thing but do it really well.

The Houston company next month will start shipping the TaskSmart C-Series Internet caching server, the first in a new family of high-end, single-purpose server appliances.

The caching server will be followed by several other server appliances this year, including boxes specifically for file storage, e-mail, security and virtual private networking, officials said.

Compaq Computer today provided early details about a new line of single-purpose, low-maintenance appliance servers - to be branded TaskSmart - the first of which will be a caching appliance built using Novell's Internet Caching System software.

Network-attached storage to skyrocket

While today's storage industry buzz is centered almost exclusively on storage-area networks (SAN), users shouldn't over look the value of network-attached storage (NAS), some analysts say.

IDC released a report today that stated the NAS market "will skyrocket'' from $540 million in 1998 to $5.1 billion by 2003, representing an annual growth rate of 54%. Gray said that compares with an overall storage market growth rate of 11% per year.
