Nexabit Rejected Bids From Several Top Phone-Equipment Makers

The New York Times reported earlier today that No. 1 phone
equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. was close to acquiring
Nexabit for $600 million to $800 million. Citing unnamed
executives close to the acquisition talks, the Times also said
the talks could fall through.

Nexabit's product is being evaluated in the networks of
Frontier Corp., the No. 5 U.S. long-distance provider, Road
Runner, the No. 2 supplier of high-speed Internet access over
cable lines, and four other telecommunication service providers
Chatter declined to name.

''These guys are the real thing,'' said Farrokh Billimoria,
general partner with Sprout Capital LP, the venture capital unit
