I am not sure why a box maker would want to pay $5 per machine when they can easily pay $0. That's a very good question that I too would like to know the answer to.

Like you, I guess I have been a bit more skeptical than most on this IPO. It seems slightly expensive for one thing. But about the support thing, I think Fortune 500 and most other "legitimate" companies would rather have the support of a legitimate Linux "company" (such as Red Hat) than depending on the random Linux contributor over the net. After all, Red Hat will have the best people who know the most about Linux. That's the reputation they are building, anyhoo.
