" The REAL growth for Merced/IA64 will occur gradually - modest in 2000 because most purchases will be for engineering evaluation/trail runs. The first year of Merced production will be one of constant hardware evaluation/updates as well as software development from Intel's ISV (Independent Software Vendors) - both OS and applications. I wouldn't expect real earnings impact until the latter half of 2001. Paul

Steve, what most people don't realize is that Merced is going to be low volumes, perhaps even lower volume than Xeon initially. The big problem is software. There isn't any IA-64 software out there yet, and there won't be much more than a small base when Merced is released. Instead, Merced is supposed to get the ball rolling on software development. By the time McKinley, Madison, and Deerfield roll around, a large enough software base should be established by then. That's when we see the real money coming in. Until then, Intel will just have to rely on the next-generation IA-32 processors Willamette and Foster to push the performance edge. Tenchusatsu
