The analogies are running rampant here. Railroads, trucking, MAC operating systems, super market aisles...

Hi Frank:

Thanks for giving us a dose of the technical realities underlying our analogies.

Unfortunately, when communicating to the lay-world an analogy whose primary objective is to relate the issues raised by open access, one must unfortunately "sacrifice" some of the more technical realities of the true model in order that the layperson understand what is at stake.

Any insight you have that could improve the analogy/model that would not unnecessarily "lose" the layperson would be most helpful.

Notwithstanding, I do feel William Barr's reliance on this model is well-placed despite his effort to misrepresent how cable-modem access is the only access.

I can only think how the monopolies controlled by railroads 100 years ago began to diminish in power with the advent of the "horseless carriage." What is different today is the quickness with which new technologies can alter the powers of the incumbent infrastructure.

PS I still owe you a response on Last Mile, I believe. Can't keep up with you guys. This thread has excellent posters, but 40-50 posts a day is tough (for me) to keep up with.
