My question is, Are the parallel port CF readers (only about 50 bucks) good (i.e., fast enough--1.5 Mbps claimed), and if so, does anybody have a suggestion as to brand?

The choice is simple. I would buy the ImageMate CompactFlash reader and select an alternate image editing software as my default "photo lab". I own Sierra Imaging's Image Expert and Microsoft's picture it. You will be able to download your 8 MB card in just a few seconds.

I would also stick to a jpeg format for the photos.

Also, rechargeable NiMH batteries are a must!
