For the longest time I argued against owning MSFT or DELL, well, I was wrong. I admit it.

Hey, Mike, when your favorite quote on your profile is from John Kenneth Galbraith, Our worst economic "Guru", its no wonder you have been wrong on other things! :o)

RE: Affymetrix vs INCY

Sorry but I am not good at building concise, well thought out arguments. I tend to operate from gut feel instead. That's why I hoped to encourage some good discussion on this thread from some very rational people.

I've been in and out of QCOM since '92. I tend to be early but have no complaints since my current QCOM holdings are up about 12 1/2 times. Biotech is about to make great strides over the next 5 years and there are going to be some big winners there as well as in communications. Here is my origional post on INCY;

Message 9126509

Early on QCOM was very out of favor and no one thought they would prevail. INCY is currently very out of favor judging by the stock price over the past year. Yes, INCY has a lawsuit against them but some feel that INCY will prevail. See INCY thread starting about #900. The judge ruled against AFFY on the preliminary injunction. I have been buying under $20 over the past 6 months to build a position.

Further thought can be found at the following posting. (There are some very knowledgeable people here on SI such as Peter Sussman, Vector1 (an investment banker from LA) and Dave "Rocketman" a former key employee at INCY.)

Maybe we can spark some thought provoking discussion from non-biotech investors and peak their interests as well.

The reason many of us tend to avoid the biotechs is that they are a real crap shoot. The human body is so complex and it's reactions to drugs so unpredictable that even if you have a good background in this field it's hard to be early enough to make money. If something is really good, many of the scientists doing the studies will find a way to break the double blind code and invest before you. A government agency (FDA) can decide something negative and wipe out most of your investment overnight. We like gorillas on this thread because they are the opposite of biotech, they already have a competitive advantage that can be sustained many years. If anybody out there still wants to invest in one, check out Pharmacyclics (PCYC).The science behind this one is very good and innovative, and it's products will (if they work) address a large market. Since phototactivated porphorins somewhat similar to PCYC's products already exist in human disease states, we have some idea of their toxicity in advance. I have a small investment in it.
