Has it really gotten this far out of hand, do you think? Or is it not merely the amazing amorality of the young when out from under the parental eye? Many of them learn morality as they go along, but it takes time.

You seem to be confusing concepts. Morality is what all good parents teach their children. It has utterly nothing whatsoever to do with religion, although religious parents may believe their sense of morality comes from religious training. Nonreligious parents are clear that it does not.
