Jenne - I admit I am not familiar with the root of the author's problem with Lycos. Do you? I posted a request for an explanation on the InternetStockNews club at Yahoo.

I don't see how anybody can "burn" an icon onto a PC. It would take a seriously cyber-challenged user to not know how to uninstall an icon and/or program if the user doesn't like it.

Seems to me that the author has a hidden agenda somewhere.

Under the agreement, new Compaq Presario Internet PCs will be equipped with Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) ready modems .... I'm far more likely to buy a computer with preloaded software than one with a Lycos icon BURNED in!

Haven't we done this before? Let's see...CPQ made computers with built in buttons on the keyboard to get you tied in with AltaVista. Then CPQ stock dropped like a rock.

Now CPQ is going to go one step worse. Your computer is wired up to damn near force you to log into AOL. Would you buy a car that can only gas up at one gas station? If CPQ was smart they would make the computer so you had a large menu of every major DSL supplier to choose from.

CPQ really knows the internet business - it is the only business I know that has been sitting on a red hot internet site (AltaVista) for years and still refuses to IPO it (they just constantly talk about it). I wonder how many tens or hundreds of millions of dollars they have squandered by refusing to IPO. CPQ's stock speaks for itself - no management - no vision - no value.
