Dell, IBM, Quantex top PC Magazine service survey

NEW YORK, June 20 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq:DELL - news), IBM
(NYSE:IBM - news) and Quantex were the only desktop personal computer brands who
received A grades from customers in a service and reliability survey of 17,000 computer
users published in the July issue of PC Magazine.

In overall use, Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news), Hewlett-Packard Co.
(NYSE:HWP - news), Micron Electronics (Nasdaq:MUEI - news) and Sony got Bs in the
report-card style survey.

The lowest E grade went to Acer Inc. and Packard Bell-NEC Inc., with AST, Compaq
Computer (NYSE:CPQ - news) and MidWest Micro receiving Ds.

Compaq, the number one seller of home PCs, got the lowest E rating from home users, but did somewhat better among office
users of its desktops with a C grade.

For notebooks, IBM and Sony, a newcomer to laptops, came out on top. Compaq, Dell, Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW - news),
Micron and Toshiba Corp. took B grades. Notebook grades for Dell and Gateway fell to a B from As last year.

The survey tallied scores on four measures, including repair frequency over one year, and satisfaction with reliability, repair
experience and technical support.
