I remember responding to a coworker
who remarked that he saw no problem with prayer in the schools by asking, "Fine, to
whom should children be praying?"

To whomever or whatever they want to.

Listening to daily readings of the Bible, trying to figure out what the "Lord's Prayer" really meant, listening to ignorant homilies from my teachers (who were not trained in philosophy or theology) created a lively interest in religion among my little group of friends. We thought scientifically and skeptically. We had to learn without models. Eventually, nearly all us arrived at a powerful atheism where we could argue every point effectively. My knowledge of the scriptures -- I memorized almost all of the daily readings -- has been invaluable. We didn't have a bible in my home.
My children never had this opportunity. They became atheists unthinkingly, automatically, instinctively. They despise me for wasting my time reading the Bible which they consider ancient dust.
They see no evidence for the existence of a god, and there's an end to it. Even the philosopher dismisses god as an unneeded hypothesis. It's impossible to get a good argument around home. I think my dog believes in god. He thinks it's my wife. She's gone to find papayas and mangos for tomorrow's breakfact. Spot is howling so mournfully it breaks my heart. Alone in a godless universe.
