it is not only emphysema and lung cancer to worry about...smoking is a leading risk factor in all forms of vascular disease including heart attacks, strokes and lower extremity arterial blockage....the way to stop smoking is to have people who care about you and just doing it...the patch can help but it has to come from you....It took me years to get my dad to quit...one thing that can really help is to actually see a lung that came from a patient who smoked...that sounds a bit gross but if you actually saw it you would be very shocked and might quit...the other way of course is to wait until you have a heart attack or stroke...that usually gets people to quit
