Japan's PC Sales in Fourth Week of May Increase Sharply June 21, 1999 (TOKYO) -- PC sales in Japan at about 2,000 retailers of household electric appliances in the fourth week of May 1999 (May 24-30) increased 28.4 percent in numbers and 33.2 percent in value, compared to the previous week. The survey was conducted by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company handling the POS data for mass marketing outlets of household electric appliances. Compared to the same week a year earlier (May 25-31, 1998), the number of PCs sold rose by 81.8 percent and the increase in value terms was 83.9 percent. The average sales price rose 7,915 yen from 213,649 yen to 221,564 yen. (119.90 yen = US$1) This was the largest growth in value terms since the beginning of the year. The reason sales recovered so quickly was because most all of the summer models appeared in shops in the fourth week of May. PC manufacturers typically launch their summer sales campaigns from the beginning of June to the middle of June. But last year, the launches were advanced to late May because the Windows 98 operating system was to be released in July. Although there was no such special factor, the summer sales battle this year also started in late May. Just as with the case of the spring sales battle, the launch of the new models started about two weeks earlier than normal. This was the second time this year that the average sales price rose by almost 8,000 yen. It also happened in the first week of February, when the spring sales battle got into stride (with prices increasing by 13,710 yen compared to the previous week). The changes in the summer models mainly center on smaller improvements compared to the launch of the spring models. For example, hard disk capacities of many low-end models were raised to 6GB. Thus, the margin of the rise in price was smaller compared to that of the opening of the spring sales campaign and the average sales price was 221,564 yen, or lower than that of the first week of February at 226,827 yen. GfK Japan collects POS data from 55 IT-related retail sales companies centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of April 1998) throughout Japan. In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales in volume and value. The sales data has been based on the same 41 companies (with about 2,000 stores) since April 1996. The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 stores is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and when limiting the sales to retail sales channel, the share comes to about 25 percent of such shipments.
