I think it was Adam Smith who said, "what is prudent practice for the individual household surely cannot be folly when practiced by the nation as a whole." (or something to that effect.)

Makes you wonder, doesn't it. It's terrific when the economic performance for a single firm exceeds expectations/earnings forecasts. The stock skyrockets. When the same happens for a large number of firms (i.e., the "economy"), this is somehow supposed to be a harbinger of economic disaster for the nation, and the entire financial market tanks. Go figure.
