You might try asking over on the Ask God thread. I think this is the stick, as in carrot-and-stick. They don't believe anyone can be civil, orderly, law-abiding or considerate of one's fellow man without being terrified of hell-fire and damnation. Says more about them than they'd care to reveal, IMHO.

I am pretty sure that a lot of the most conservative Christians would insist that this be posted. This is at the core of their belief system. If that is not true, perhaps some of them can drop by from Ask God and correct me.
