rlevy,

I'm pretty sure your MAC would not be causing a slow surfing problem (unless your hard drive is short on space and/or your MAC's memory is insufficient and is using the hard drive as a virtual memory substitute). If your MAC has at least 100 MB of unused free disc space and at least 16 MB of unused memory after loading operating system and inuse programs, then my guess is there's a 99% chance AOL is the culprit.

AOL has not traditionally been strong at providing a window to the Web. AOL is most interested in people spending lots of time using their own proprietary services such as AOL Finance. AOL has recently made big improvements with Web surfing speeds by beefing up their infrastructure, but this doesn't mean all parts of the country have been optimized for Web surfing through AOL.

To get better results, you might try dialing in with a different AOL number in your local area, since they probably have many phone numbers to choose from. If that doesn't work, I'd try using a different ISP such as Earthlink or MindSpring.
