pc, i left the bay area b/c $200k homes sell for $500k. i moved to place where the weather is better, the pollution is less and i'm paid more. the bay area is nice. very nice. pollution and congestion are pains, but it is a bunch of big cities. wine country is fantastic. sf is ok, too. more fun to visit than to live in, imho.

the absurd housing "values" just don't jive well w/ me and my fundamental outlook. a friend of mine recently purchased a home in the bay area. it was 30 years older than my home. it was smaller than my home. it was also $235k more than my home. since he is a marketing manager for a software company, he can pay that much. he does quite well. while i am doing very well, i am not doing that well ;-)

i'd hate to see the price in a nice recession, though. you know, if such things were possible.

good luck.
