Universal free education is a basic qualifying characteristic of a
civilized society,

Gosh. I never realized that there were no civilized societies in the world until about a hundred years ago or so. To think that Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Dickens, Lamb, Milton, Raleigh, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Frankin, even Abe Lincoln, all lived in uncivilized societies. They all had to do with private educations. And now I find they were all living in uncivilized societies.

Boy, it's amazing what you learn on SI.

Steve,
You have a point. By having to pay for public education when not using it the people are supporting a system that could be making society better for everyone, including them.
