Hughes , Intel in satellite TV deal June 21, 1999 08:28 AM SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21 (Reuters) - Semiconductor maker Intel Corp. said Monday it would join forces with Hughes Electronics Corp. GMH in a digital satellite TV venture that will provide Internet services along with programming. The company said in a statement that it and Hughes Network Systems would collaborate Hughes-built digital satellite set-top products. They will be based on Intel Architecture microprocessors and other Intel and HNS technologies. The first of the products will be America Online Inc.'s AOL TV satellite receiver. It is capable of supporting AOL TV, which will include interactive services as well as more than 200 channels of digital TV using Hughes' DIRECTV technology. Intel also said it was licensing DirecPC technology from HNS to integrate the technology into future products. "Working with Intel will allow us to quickly develop and build a wide range of cutting-edge digital set-top products, each with its own unique and compelling broadband capabilities," said Paul Gaske, general manager of HNS' Broadcast Products Division. "Our goal is to bring television into the Internet age," said Claude Leglise, vice president, Intel Architecture Business Group and general manager, Home Products Group.
