Daly is an alcoholic and has lots of public turmoil from time to time. Often he gets so irritated with his game he just throws in the towel. however, he is a real talent, and many golf fans including antman like him. The context of the open is that they make the selection of the golf course, and then the maintenance of the course leading up to the tournament, the most difficult test of golf possible. They cut the greens much shorter than normal, and let the rough grow much longer than normal. Also, they choose only the hardest courses. In this case the greens were said to be turtle's backs. imagine trying to keep a golf ball on a turtle's back. so many times balls that landed on greens went off the side or back. often putts from on the green went off the green. on one hole yesterday, daly got so frustrated as a ball he had chipped up came back at him for the third time rejected by the turtle back green. he hit the moving ball as it came back to him. that is against the rules which call for a two stroke penalty. golf is the game most marked by being a game of honor in all of sport, so just a known violation like that is almost shocking. however after the round he was very critical of the usga that hosts the open each year. He said he doubted he would play next year at Pebble Beach because the usga would just ruin another tournament. Johnny Miller, big time golfer, now commentator for NBC, basically called Daly a whacko. And he did it repeatedly. And he brought it up again and again, even half an hour after the interview was over. The open is much more than a golf tournament. It is a test of courage, character, guts, stamina...And Tiger, Mickelson, and Payne, among others showed true excellence in all of those areas. Daly had a moment of weakness and Miller was graceless, imo.
