SINGAPORE, June 16 (Reuters) - Ten Asian
telecommunications
companies signed an agreement on Wednesday to
build an undersea
fibre optics network to link seven countries in the
region.
Singapore Telecommunications Ltd <TELE.SI>
(SingTel) said
the network would link Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan,
Hong Kong,
Malaysia and Singapore by 2002.
It said in a statement the companies signed a
memorandum of
understanding in Kunming, China, for the planning of
the
network.
The 10 companies were Cable & Wireless HKT
<0008.HK>, China
Telecom <CHL.N>, Chunghwa Telecom , Japan
Telecom <9434.T>,
Korea Telecom <30200.KS>, KDD Corp <9431.T>,
NTT Worldwide
Network <9432.T>, SingTel, Telekom Malaysia
<TLMM.KL> and
Telstra Corp Ltd <TLS.AX>.
SingTel said the network would be able to support

and E-commerce and would be configured to allow use
by
companies that require uninterrupted communications.
The system would also be interconnected with other
trans-Pacific fibre optic networks that already link
China and
Japan with the United States.
