SkyStream Corporation Receives Intel Investment 06/21/1999 Business Wire (Copyright (c) 1999, Business Wire) MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 21, 1999--SkyStream Corporation, a leading developer of broadband networking products that deliver media-rich Internet content over broadcast networks, today announced that Intel Corporation invested in the company. Financial details were not disclosed. The two companies have been collaborating on a series of digital broadcasting trials to transmit Internet data and television content over satellite and Digital TV (DTV) networks using SkyStream's Integrator family of products with Intel Architecture computing platforms. "Companies such as SkyStream are building products and technology to help solve a big problem that exists today on the Internet: finding sufficient bandwidth to support the growing trend of delivering richer and richer content over the Internet," said Claude Leglise, vice president and general manager of the Home Products Group at Intel. "By enabling broadband service providers with the ability to broadcast Internet content over high speed networks, consumers and business will be able to experience a whole new class of services and applications." SkyStream has developed a series of products to address the needs of the converging Internet and broadcast TV markets. SkyStream's broadcast networking products enable cable, satellite, digital TV companies and Internet service providers to provide viewers with mass market and special-event data broadcast programs and services. Using SkyStream's Integrator product line, media service providers, content developers, and video broadcasters can combine MPEG -based digital video content with IP-based data content into a single transmission stream. NPO enables broadcasters to insert Internet data into otherwise unusable space created by an incoming video bitstream. Last November, Intel used SkyStream's products in the nation's first live demonstration of enhanced digital TV broadcasting. During the airing of a documentary on architect Frank Lloyd Wright by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), Intel used SkyStream's DBN-25 Integrator to broadcast enhanced content over a digital TV transmission. The video and additional educational content was viewed in select locations using PCs capable of receiving and displaying the enhanced DTV signal.
