<< it's all about management........and the decision that cpq makes on a new ceo, will reflect "management" and the capabilities of the current board of directors.... >>

edamo: I agree with much of what you have said. Yet, DELL has the best leadership in the industry and a very deep bench. They also have attracted, motivated AND RETAINED top talent at all levels of the company. IMO, CPQ needs a new leader BUT they also need a new board. The CPQ board (lead by Mr. Rosen) have have approved all the flawed strategies that the company has utilized. IMO, Mr. Rosen should resign (the buck stops with him). He is the captain of the ship and the current ship is sinking. In order to attract THE BEST management talent to deal with Compaq's crisis situation, a new CEO needs freedom to make important decisions and select a new board. Compaq has already started to make decisions for the new leader -- for better or for worse. They also have a very stubborn Chairman (Mr. Rosen) who has not been open and candid with all of his stakeholders. Even though he owns a lot of the stock he should step down. Pride is getting in the way of doing what is right. On the other hand even if Compaq can attract a new CEO and management team there still will be a human capital (talent) problem for quite some time. IBM employees have always been much more loyal -- even though they did some gut wrenching cost cutting. All of the turbulence at Compaq has created GREAT opportunities for DELL to gain additional market share in the PC and server markets. I really feel that DELL is skating to where the puck is going and Compaq is trying to restructure a company to deal with today's marketplace. I would much rather invest in a hypergrowth firm that is PROACTIVE and a true leader.

Thanks for sharing your ideas and I sure do wish the next CEO of Compaq the best of luck -- I think they'll need it <G> !!

Best Regards,

Scott
