*OT* Paul, since you asked for why I thought the Dutch were narcissitic (as opposed to sarcastic).. Actually, in my view, they are both! Granted, I have only limited experience with the Dutch (mostly thru friends in business school and a few trips to Amsterdam...never have lived there)...but my gross generalization has always been that the Dutch, especially Dutch humor, always manages to find the dark cloud in the sunny day...(no pun with my earlier weather comment meant)...this seems (somewhat) uniquely Dutch..it does appear to me that Germans are much more narcissitic, since they have the same "dark" (duster) outlook, but usually can not say "what the he$$...let's go get drunk" at the end of the day (like Dutch I know)..in other words, the Dutch usually manage to pull some humor out..a German could say the same thing (and not make a joke out of it) and leave a very flat ending...."sprockets" I always felt that my view uncovered something about the Dutch psyche, like I was part of the Dutch "inside joke"...after all, bright orange for national team colors??....how else can the world explain Dutch fan at soccer matches (I know 6' 3" grown men who bring two little wooden shoes with them).. In conclusion, I guess the term "narcissism" is a bit harsh....after all, the Dutch do get the joke (as opposed to the Germans)...Dutch do not take themselves too seriously, unlike Germans.....But they are still Europeans, and thus struggle (at least a bit) with Americans ur-optimistism (often for no reason)...my narcissism comparison is with Americans/Dutch, not Dutch and the rest of Europe... Is it any wonder that there are no great American impressionists? Hope this helps....in good fun...IMO, your country is a fine one indeed.
