Richard : Make no mistake, there must be many white criminals here but the violence is virtually all done by blacks. I'm sure things in SAf are far superior to most parts of Africa. In fact, for "ordinary" people, they are probably still better than most places in the world. But, I imagine that's because the place still looks like it always did and there's no anarchy. Nevertheless, transformation to whatever and Africanization is taking place relentlessly. On a good day it's quite exciting to be here --- on a bad day it's very worrying. On the gold front, I also own AU (quite a few, in fact) but AU is a unique and outstanding gold investment (says he, still dreaming!). Despite the efforts of your friends to stop forward selling by the miners, I'm happy that AU has sold something forward --- at least that will pay for some dividends in time to come. Re gold price manipulation, my view is based on the statistical analyses which I do and which compare POG to value of currencies etc. I think now, for the first time since 1996, the price of gold is cheap compared to the value of the currencies viz a viz the US dollar. Accordingly, I have never been too impressed with the manipulation story. If downward manipulation was a significant factor then I would have expected POG to be substantially cheaper than the relative value of the currencies. Up to now this has not been the case in my analyses. Guns are another story. Trouble is they're not much use in the hands of ordinary folk when confronted by desperados who shoot first and ask questions later. Also a hand gun is not much use in a shoot-out against an assault rifle. Some people around here have managed to kill their assailants using a hand gun but for most people survival has depended on being docile and just giving the criminals whatever they wanted. I have been tied up in my own bedroom and had a gun shoved in my face and a knife at my throat --- and that's what I did. As far as gun control goes, what that amounts to is controlling the law-abiding person and limiting his means to self-defence. The criminals will always have whatever weapons they need. If there are no guns then they will use knives! All the same I feel, from a crime and not a political point of view, that gun laws are too liberal in the US. The Constitutional right to bear arms has clearly created a gung-ho society. Chin's up! Lovely sunny mid-winter's day here. ;0))
