Disclaimer -- I don't know about Netscape stuff. I'm just attempting to interpret what you said in your original post.

I'll start with the really easy stuff.

It looks like Communicator determines where to store temporary files by first reading the value of TEMP to get the folder name. You posted you're using Communicator, so we'll start with it.

Open a DOS window and type SET

You should see, somewhere on the screen, TEMP=C:\TEMP among some other stuff.

This will tell you that the TEMP variable has been set. You can go into Windows Explorer and determine that the directory your TEMP is pointing at does in fact exist. If it doesn't, just create it in Explorer with File | New | Folder and once the new folder has been created, (It will be named New Folder) rename it TEMP.

It's unusual to have the TEMP set and the folder missing.

If, when you type SET, you don't see a TEMP=something you must place the line SET TEMP=C:\TEMP into your AUTOEXEC.BAT somehow. The tone of your post suggests you may be uncomfortable with this, but the line can be added with NOTEPAD without difficulty. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T USE WORD or any other word processor -- they're not meant for this type of work and will make a BIG mess of things.

Moving on, Navigator has it's own temporary location. You look in General Preferences and see where Navigator expects to store its temporary files and you make sure such a place exists. Once you know what folder Navigator expects to use, you can use Windows Explorer to make sure such a folder does exist on your system, and if it doesn't, you can use Windows Explorer to create it. When you're done, you should have a folder on your system for temporary files, and Navigator should know where this folder is located.

It's too bad they chose to put both programs together in this help file because they work differently and people needing help do not need additional confusion. I know I'd have a time keeping this stuff straight.

Hope this helps, PW.

Hi mr.mark, sorry to hear of your problem. PW & JCC have touched on it probably better than I, but let me add to their suggestions.

I have a Temp Folder in C:\Windows\Temp. This folder has 40 files and 7 folders with 12.2 MB data. I would hate to delete any for now.

My Autoexec.bat reads,

SET CLASSPATH=C:\PROGRAM FILES\PHOTODELUXE 2.0\ADOBECONNECTABLES
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4

My CONFIG.SYS READS,

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE

This is the way it defaulted when I added the programs. I have not edited either Autoexec.bat or Config.sys. Everything seems to work, well most of the time <G>. I see no way to add the SET TEMP=C:\TEMP IN
Communicator or Navigator, but you can add it to your Autoexec.bat file.

START/RUN/ type in COMMAND ,OK. now do a CD\ to get the C:\ prompt.
C:\edit, enter. You should have a BLUE screen. If the mouse works click on FILE/OPEN, scroll down to Autoexec.bat, click OPEN. If mouse doesn't work use ALT+F to get the window to drop down under FILE. When Autoexec.bat is showing hit ENTER to drop all lines down 1 space. Arrow back up to empty line and type,SET TEMP=C:\TEMP. Or this line may have to go to bottom of file.
Click on FILE\SAVE, click on FILE\EXIT. You're back at the C:\Prompt, type EXIT, enter and you're back to WINDOWS. You will need to re-start computer for this change to take place. If it doesn't work go back and delete this line or type REM in front of SET (with a space). Save the changes and exit. I'm thinking the internal workings sends the temp stuff to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP file without this line in Autoexec.bat file. Can't see any harm in trying tho'.

I'm running win98, nscp 4.6.

Regards, /jw

ps; with Explore do you show a c:\windows\temp ?.

How about down loading Netscape's latest browser, 4.61. Maybe they've corrected some of the bugs causing your problems.
