It started with a bet between the Dean of the school and I. We had been having an ongoing argument about explosives and I bet $10.00 I could mix 1 gallon of nitroglycerin in the chemistry lab without it blowing up.

That Saturday I was allowed into the chemistry lab to set up the experiment. It worked perfectly and the mixture was quite stable. Unfortunately, late that same day, a clock on the wall of the lab somehow became loose, at least that's what the fire department deduced when they sifted through the rubble on Sunday morning. Needless to say, the entire school burned down.

I still remember the look on the Dean's face when I saw him the Monday following the explosion and inferno. He turned to me with haunted eyes and managed to croak, "You lost the bet."

Grudgingly I gave him the $10.00. You see, I really won, if it hadn't been for that damn clock...
