I don't really think it is realistic for a society to believe it can arm itself against invading armies, or other militaristic kinds of intended ill will. I do think that millions of Americans DO imagine being in that kind of situation, and arm themselves exactly for that reason. Then there is a larger, less radical group which believes that owning guns makes them less likely to be a victim of violence at the hands of criminals. On that point, the statistics from other nations which regulate gun ownership more restrictively than we do seem to indicate so far that they are far MORE likely to be hurt by guns if they possess them, than to be protected by them.
