Just a follow-up. There's still a root directory entry limit today. There can not be more than 512 entries in your root directory of C: (C:\). One caveat though...the FAT table interprets long file names as more than one entry. It could be as much as 5 entries depending on the length. I don't have the exact calculations for it, but you could have only a couple of hundred files in your root directory and still come up with FAT errors.

It's normally recommended to keep the root clean of all files except boot files, and try to keep a clean directory structure for file storage.
