And on what is that based?

Sounds to me like elitism, which used to be acceptable--even admirable--but today runs smack into overwhelming flak from the PC brigade! <g?

How true this is. The more you know, the more tolerant you might be- not MUST be, but education usually results in more liberal views (that is why academics tend to be, statistically, liberal -imo). THAT is why totalitarian movements fear the press. That is why Churches ban books. That is why (imo) the tree of knowledge is the one the Devil hides in- any group that wants to control the minds of its believers WOULD see knowledge as evil. When a man can really think for himself he becomes less likely to tow the group-think line.

If you cannot read how much information are you really going to get? How much are you going to know about world events? How much are you going to know about people from other cultures? How much are you going to create to propel your civilization forward, or even to sustain it? Civilization IS cultural and technological development (see the dictionary definition before you jump on me- if you disagree with this) which really doesn't happen without literacy.
